ALYOF Goal Achieved!

My November ALYOF goal was to piece my Night Sky quilt top.  Goal achieved!!!  I finished up late last night but had to wait until today to get a photo.

Night Sky was easy to piece, but it took some time.  Half triangles were sewn together and then sewn to the diamonds.  This created a triangle, and three triangles were pieced to make a half hexagon.

Although the pieces become full hexagons in the quilt top, they are pieced together as half hexagons for easy piecing.

It was a tad windy trying to take a photo.

Now the difficult decision...how to quilt this (and thread colour).  Your suggestions are appreciated.

  1. Wow, Anja, it's beautiful! I can't believe you finished piecing that thing... They were just tiny bits (well, a bunch of tiny things held together) when I last saw it! Not sure how to quilt it, but i think a darkish gray would look great. I first thought "black ", but on second thought, it would be lost on the black background and too harsh on the vibrant colours. Something between medium gray and charcoal would be my choice.

  2. It is absolutely stunning. I think the wind helped - it's a very cool photo. I would use a med/dark grey thread on all of it, even the colors. Congrats on your finish.

  3. Oh Anja! You've taken my breath away with this quilt! It is utterly gorgeous! I love all the subtle shades you out together in your bright stars. Set against the black background, it is spectacular! I'm no help with advice about quilting it. I think I might do every star separately in thread to match... but that's a tall order.

  4. This came together beautifully, Anja! Isn't Julie so clever in her piecing? I am partial to a ROYGBIV rainbow variegated form Aurifil (3817, I believe). I also think you can't go wrong with black or dark gray here.

  10. Anja this is simply gorgeous! I love that hexagons are easy to put together if you do it in halves (Bethany Reynolds, Stack 'n Whack queen showed me that). Love love the colours here. MMMM! As for quilting, oooh, I'd check out Angela Walters, but also Kathleen Quilts sites, also Judi Madsen for ideas. So many possibilities here! Is it for you?

  11. It is stunning! It would depend on what color the back is going to be. Sometimes I think too much quilting can be distracting to the quilt top itself. I know that's not a popular way to finish a quilt though. I would only quilt in the black area with a very dark gray almost black. For the fabulous stars I would carefully use a color that matches each star and stitch in the ditch. It's a lot of tying off but it would mimic the colors and design from front to black.

  12. Your pic of the finished top,is wicked good! You were down to the wire on this one. There's just something about publicly stating a goal (and the prospect of prizes) that is just so damned motivating. It looks great!
