WIP Wednesday - Just the Basics QAL

First and foremost, a huge I'M SORRY to Leanne @ Devoted Quilter.  I've been playing along with her Just the Basics Mystery Quilt Along since March, but I haven't written a single blog post about my progress.  That's no way to show support to a fellow blogger.  I don't even have any photos along the way of my progress.  Oh my......

It's been a great monthly QAL.  But I forewarn you...there are a LOT of small HST's to be made.  The pattern comes in two sizes:

  • Baby size - 48 x 48 inches
  • Throw size - 60 x 72 inches

I'm glad I went with the baby size because the first step was to make 128 HST's....2.5-inch HST's.  Can't imagine having had to make 240 HST's for the throw size.

The two flying geese blocks were pieced in different months, and they were joined together in July's instructions.  When I began to press the seams of the newly-joined block, I realized that karma had paid me a visit as payback for not blogging about the QAL.  Somehow, I pieced one of the flying geese blocks with the wrong side of the yellow fabric facing out.  Ummmm.....how the heck did I do that???  There were 64 blocks, so I made a design choice to leave them as is.

This is one of the 16 blocks in the baby size.

At least, I was consistent and pieced all the 64 blocks with the wrong side out.  I'm hoping that once it's quilted, my mistake won't be as noticeable.

There are a lot of seams in this quilt.  There were a few times when I was piecing the rows that I thought I was going to break a needle.

Time to put on my thinking cap and decide on a quilting plan.

  2. I just opened up Bloglovin and there at the top of my feed was your post...and the first thing I read was that you're saying sorry to me for something??? No worries, Anja! I know how life gets in the way of our best intentions of sharing everything and the most important thing was just to have you sewing along :)

Your quilt turned out beautifully and I can't wait to see how you quilt it. I'm still working on quilting mine :)

I did laugh out loud about your wrong side out yellow, though I didn't notice it until you pointed it out. Actually, what I had noticed was that your yellow boxes really pop!

There are a lot of seams (and HSTs!) in this quilt. In future designs I may have to try to remember that not everyone likes working with many, many little pieces like I do!

  3. You have been so busy this summer, Anja! I am super impressed that you participated in so many QALs and really kept up with the sewing. Blogging can always come later. :) And you know, that design decision to sew the fabric upside down is a lovely choice - like Leanne, I would not have noticed had you not pointed it out and I kept thinking you meant the yellow was supposed to be on the outside of the flying geese unit. I finally caught on.

  4. This is so beautiful! I'm impressed that you sewed along and created such a gorgeous top... as everyone has been saying, blogging can always come later (and you certainly know I've been guilty of choosing summering, family time, and sewing over blogging the past few months). I love how Yvonne just casually approved of your design decision. I agree that it's a very subtle and beautiful (albiet a bit unexpected) design element, and it actually adds a bit to the design. It's like you used two similar but not QUITE exact fabrics. I would have never known had you not pointed it out. I'm looking forward to seeing how you quilt it. I'm sure if you go slowly and steadily, you'll quilt it without a hitch. I sew tiny bits all the time and somehow, the needle gets through LOL

  5. I love this one! The colors are wonderful, everything pops in just the right way. :) I hadn't noticed the yellow being wrong side out until you pointed it out, I just thought it was a subtle design choice! Lol. Looking forward to seeing how you quilt this one! :)

  6. It's a great quilt. I love making HST's but having to make 240 is a little daunting, I agree. Still, it'a a great design. And I like the backwards fabric - it adds a whole new dimension!

  9. It looks like a coordinating colour choice. Not a mistake at all. Beautiful.

  10. You know if you hadn't pointed it out, I would have never noticed it was the wrong side. I just kind of thought the yellow was scrappy. This one turned out beautifully.

  11. Nah, you just meant to do it that way! But really, as long as your consistent, no one will notice. Such is the beauty of quilting! Thanks for sharing this on Midweek Makers

  12. I love this quilt because as simple as it is...i see different patterns depending on the level of focus i use in my eyes. sometimes I see a traditional pattern, sometimes I see rectangles, and sometimes I see diamonds. A very nice design!

  13. Loved reading of your "design choice" and the comments of everyone above who support it. :-)
It is inspiring to read a post and the comments of so many positive and supportive artists.

It's a beautiful quilt, Anja. Thank you for posting to TN&TN's WIP Wednesday!

  14. It's not a mistake it's artistic license. I've been known to purposely use the back side of fabric because I like the colour better. It's a beautiful quilt and a testament to what can be done with a simple HST.

  15. Well we may not have followed along but the end result is no less beautiful for that . I'm just thinking you have got soooo much done over the summer

  16. If all of those back-to-front fabrics are consistent (as they are), then it is a deliberate design feature and not an error. :)
