TGIFF - Double Crossed Pattern Testing

This week's finish is one of my many quilt tops that are waiting in the queue to be quilted.  Last weekend, we had such beautiful weather that the house was unbearably hot.  So it was a good motivator to do some quilting, as my mid-arm is in the basement where it is cool.  😉

This is the Double Crossed pattern that I tested for Cindy @ Stitchin at Home, but I never got around to quilting it.  You can buy the pattern here.  I made the baby size, so the design from the two different blocks is not as prominent as in the larger sizes.

The reason I have a pile of unfinished quilt tops is that I don't know what quilting motif to use.  I overthink it and then procrastinate.  I decided to quilt all-over loops and flowers just to get it done.

I quilted my name and put a triangle in the binding like I did in my Fly This Way quilt.  That binding was sewn to the front and then hand stitched to the back.  I mostly machine stitch my binding, so I wanted to figure out how to do the triangle for that method.

I find it hard to capture the true colour of Kona Silver.

This is my favourite backing fabric -- Prisms by Studio e Fabrics -- and it's a wide-back.

TGIFF - Heart Quilt for #QuiltsforNovaScotia

Do not adjust your screen --  I am hosting Thank Goodness It's Finished Friday for the second week in a row.  Now is the chance to share your finish from this week.

If you would like to host TGIFF, there are lots of dates available for the remainder of 2020.  You can sign up here.

In April, Nova Scotia had a mass shooting -- the worse in the province's history and the worse in Canada's history.  So as quilters do, my guild (Maritime Modern Quilt Guild) started a quilt drive for families of the victims and first responders.  Our own Andrea @ 3rd Story Workshop created a design for a heart quilt -- which she shares at no cost.

I'm part of quilt bee of four, and this was our group effort.  I pieced the blocks and did the quilting.  It's now in Jenn's hands for binding and adding the label.  The binding is made from Nova Scotia tartan.

I did an all-over stipple in white thread, and it gives the quilt lots of texture.

Andrea did a great job with this pattern.  The quilt is 65 inches square.

WIP Wednesday - Summer Sampler 2020 Continues

Here's my version of Block #3 Lakeside for the the Summer Sampler 2020 hosted by Swim Bike QuiltLee Heinrich, and Fresh Lemon Quilts.  There's still time to get the pattern and sew along.

This week, I used Kona Snow, Turquoise, Sangria, Peapod, Aqua, and Honey Dew.

Hopefully, I can stay on track for this QAL, but since I still haven't finished all the blocks for the 2019 QAL, I'm not making any promises. 😊

TGIFF - Fly This Way

Thank Goodness It's Finished Friday is once again being hosted here on the east coast of Canada.  If you are new to TGIFF, this is an opportunity to share your finish from the week, either through a blog post or an Instagram photo.

If you would like to host TGIFF, there are lots of dates available for the remainder of 2020.  You can sign up here.

You may remember from a previous blog post that I took an EQ8 workshop at QuiltCon Austin.  I designed something simple to practice the techniques I learned and then actually make the design.

This piece finishes at 28 inches, using Kona Nightfall and Tangerine.  If you start at the top left-hand corner, the path follows the direction of each flying geese block.

This was another opportunity to practice big stitch hand quilting (which I also learned at QuiltCon Austin).  I tried a new-to-me perle cotton -- Presencia perle cotton size 12 #7567 Medium Orange Spice that I purchased from Mad About Patchwork.

My friend Dena thought it would be interesting to put a triangle in the binding.  I must stop consulting with her, but she always has great ideas.  😉  I could have added a triangle the full width of the binding, but then it wouldn't look like a triangle.  But how to add a tiny triangle????  I was intrigued, so I played around with some scraps.  Even after I thought I had it correct on the good binding, I still had to make an adjustment.  It worked!!

I don't have a specific plan for this quilt, but I'm thinking it may make an appearance on a wall in my house.

Another photo of the binding triangle because it's so darn cute.  😊

Now it's time to link up your blog post or Instagram photo showing your finish by using the linkup below.  Don't forget to visit a few blogs -- it's a great way to discover new quilters and to get some quilty inspiration.  Please include the TGIFF button or a link to the TGIFF blog in your blog post so your followers can also view all the great finishes.

WIP Wednesday - Summer Sampler 2020

Are you sewing along with Summer Sampler 2020 hosted by Swim Bike Quilt, Lee Heinrich, and Fresh Lemon Quilts?

I bought my pattern just before the first block was released.  I assumed I had the necessary Kona in my stash....I was wrong.  So I'm going to substitute some colours based on what is in my stash.

This is Block 1 Trellis, using Kona Berry (instead of Cerise), Aqua, Acid Lime (instead of Cactus), and Snow.  The blocks are all 12.5 inches unfinished.

And did you know you can buy orange masking tape??  Yes please!!

This is Block 2 Infinite Pinwheels.  I used Kona Snow, Breakers (instead of Oasis), Celestial, Acid Lime (instead of Cactus), and Peapod.

I used my Bloc Loc HST ruler for both these blocks.  It makes trimming so much easier.

So now I'm caught up and waiting for Block 3 to be released next week.

Finish Friday - Centred QAL

If you didn't sew along with Sandra @ Musings of a Menopausal Melon for her Centred QAL, you missed out on a great pattern.  The blocks are quick and easy to piece.

I love the Island Batik fabrics I used.  Sandra made a multi-coloured version, and I'm looking forward to making one as well, perhaps with some orange.  😉

I thought about straight-line quilting but didn't want the added work of marking lines.  So a wavy line with a loop gave me the appearance of lines, but I didn't have to be precise.  As I do with all my quilts, I used Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 batting.

A new practice is to quilt my name somewhere near the bottom of the quilt.  I attempted 2020.  Not bad for not having a plan or practicing in advance.

Time to print off a colouring page to figure out what colours to use for my next version.
