I made the quilt top during the Push-Pull Quilt Along hosted by Yvonne @ Quilting Jetgirl, but I didn't finish the quilting in time for the final link up.
I used Kona Red, Morning Glory, and Surf. It finishes around 44 x 49 inches.
My brilliant idea of using my walking foot to stitch a continuous spiral didn't end up being so brilliant after all. I started at the centre of the four arrows in the bottom left-hand corner, but I echoed using the edge of my walking foot -- so I ended up with a 3/8-inch spiral. 😲
It took several nights of quilting, including a 5-hour session on the last night because I was tired of quilting and just needed it to be done.
After quilting, it did not lay flat. I was going to block it, but that seemed like a lot of work for a quilt I hope will be used and washed on a regular basis. I'll learn how to block on a smaller quilt another time.
As much as I hated the quilting process, I love the finished look. ♥

ReplyDeleteWow! The spiral quilting looks fabulous. I love the color combination in the quilt, but I adore the quilting. With a 3/8 inch spiral, it's not wonder it took so long. Obviously, it was time well spent.

The quilt is plenty flat in my book. The colors and quilting are stunning—and as a lover of dense quilting, I think the narrow spiral enhances the design. If it were wider apart, it might compete. (Even if it did require a marathon session. Sometimes it’s worth suffering for art.)
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, the first thing I thought when I saw your beautiful quilt was that it must have taken forever to do that circular quilting! Sounds like it did. But it's worthy and now you have a wonderful, cozy quilt for snuggling.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great job. I get it about the blocking but its “quick drying season” so not so bad once you decide to take the plunge.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great, and I noticed the spiral quilting before reading the post! If you try it again, I love my guide for parallel lines so I can set the width instead of being dependent on the edge of my foot. I've done spirals from 1" to the whole span of my guide, which is just shy of 2 1/2". Much easier when your lines are even a little more spaced out! But really, this looks fantastic!
