Turnabout Patchwork - Double Disappearing Nine Patch

Back in January, I gave you a sneak peek of a project I was working on.  Today is my turn on the blog hop for a new book by Teresa @ Sewn Up, Teresa Down Under -- Turnabout Patchwork.  You can buy the book here.

I made the Double Disappearing Nine-Patch, and here's my finished quilt.

You start out with a simple nine-patch block using 5-inch squares, that you cut into eight pieces -- the traditional horizontal and vertical cuts, and then you cut each quadrant on the diagonal.

You sew the opposite inner triangles (with pink corners) together and the outer triangles together.

This results in four 6.5-inch blocks -- two blocks that have reverse colours on the top.

And two blocks with a little bit of colour in the corners.

The layout is alternating blocks.  The white centre is a result of operator error (block trimming error), and I didn't have any fabric to make more blocks.

I attempted a flower quilting motif.  Some flowers are a little more organic than others.  😊

I can't wait to try some of the other patterns in the book.

Giveaway:  Teresa has generously offered a free e-book so I can host a giveaway.   For a chance to win, leave a comment.  The giveaway ends at midnight on Monday, February 11.

Turnabout Patchwork Blog Hop

Teresa @ Sewn Up, Teresa Down Under has a great new book called Turnabout Patchwork.  Teresa says:
It’s all about playing with blocks – making a block, slicing it up, and turning or repositioning the pieces to make a completely different block (sometimes two smaller blocks) to yield endless quilt tops.

Teresa is hosting a blog hop from January 28 through to February 9.  I'll be showing my project on February 8.

I started with 5-inch blocks in four colours.

The blocks were sewn into 9-patch blocks.

And then the block is cut in half horizontally and vertically, and then each of the four quadrants is cut in half on the diagonal.

You'll have to come back on February 8 to see how the pieces are sewn together.  😉

I'll share the blog hop schedule later in the month.

Friday Finish - Crazy Nine Patch

This is a quilt I completed back in the fall, but it was just gifted this week.

The tutorial can be found over at Jenny Allsorts.  I wanted to try a crazy nine-patch, as well as crazy diagonal quilting.

A few photos showing the quilting.

I was glad I tried the crazy quilting, but I don't think it's something that I will use very often.  It just didn't impress me.

My friend G was ecstatic to receive the quilt that she actually cried.  I feel so good when my gifts are so appreciated.  G recently had knee surgery so we had a little visit today.  Her backyard is so lush and lovely, so I took the time for a photo shoot.

Long Overdue Finish Friday

I can't believe it's been three weeks since I've quilted and posted to my blog.  In my mind, I thought it was two weeks.  Oh my...  But I enjoyed the quilting break to catch up on some reading and to take it easy....okay...I was really procrastinating about some quilt tops that needed to be quilted.

But success!!  I finished a crazy nine-patch that has been hanging around far too long.  I decided to do some "crazy" straight line quilting.

I see now that there are some sections that have a lot of quilting, and other sections, not as much.  I guess that adds to its character.

I have been spray basting several of my quilts lately thanks to the suggestion by QJ.  I was only doing smaller quilts, but I was still having issues with the fabric puckering.  QJ suggested this week to lay down the batting, spray it, and then put the backing on top of the batting.   Genius!!!  What a difference.  Instead of the hardwood floor in the living room, I basted on the carpet in the basement.  The batting is so much easier to smooth out, and it sticks to the carpet.  So I stepped out in faith and attempted to spray baste a 85-inch square quilt.  Success!!!  It's like a whole new world has opened up.  Bye bye pins!!!
