TGIFF - Hand Pieced QAL

I am slowly making my way through all the quilt tops that have been waiting patiently to be quilted.  My plan is to finish them all before the end of 2020.

The Hand Pieced QAL co-hosted by Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday started in January 2019.

With the exception of machine quilting around the blocks to help with basting and machine stitching the binding to the front only, this 33 x 33 inch quilt is all hand pieced and hand quilted.

I am quite surprised at how much I enjoyed the hand work.  The top was finished back in April 2019, but then I didn't know how to quilt it, so it joined the pile of tops waiting to be quilted.

I used white #8 perle cotton in the all white backgrounds of the nine blocks.  And then I used various colours of #8 perle cotton to do straight lines in the setting triangles.

I also hand stitched the binding using #8 perle cotton.

My favourite Hobbs Premium 80/20 batting to make for a wonderful baby quilt.

WIP Wednesday - Rock Candy Pillow

I'm playing catch up with the Journey to Nebula Skill Builder QAL.  Monday was the deadline to finish the Rock Candy pattern -- clearly I'm not successful in my catch-up attempts.  LOL

When searching through my stash for fabric, I found some Alison Glass 5 x 5 inch squares.  There were enough black and white prints to cut the diamonds, and I used Kona Black for the background.  I'll be making a pillow instead of a table topper.

It didn't take long to piece the diamonds and triangles.

And then there was a finished pillow top.

Next up is the big stitch hand quilting, which I hope to finish this weekend.

TGIFF - Jawbreaker Pillow

I've been participating in the Journey to Nebula Skill Builder QAL.  And by participating, I mean I missed the first two projects.  😂

This is the Jawbreaker pattern by Jaybird Quilts.  I used some Alison Glass prints.  I had a 16-inch pillow form, so I skipped the borders.

I really don't like hand binding, although there are times when it is the best choice.  I decided to use perle cotton and visible stitching.  I think I like this.  There may be more hand binding in my future.

When I started making this project, I didn't have a recipient in mind, but I do now.  I really need to think about the recipient when I'm making a quilt -- I have far too many quilts in my house.

An all-over loop free-motion quilting in silver thread as I didn't want to distract from the prints.

More Pattern Testing - Waltzing with Bears

Sandra @ Musings of a Menopausal Melon has a pattern release today.  Waltzing with Bears is a great pattern.  Make sure you head over to get a copy of the pattern -- it's currently on sale.

I used Island Batik fabrics, and I love how it turned out.

Once you make the HSTs, the blocks piece together very quickly.

It's been hard trying to get photos because it has either been raining or extremely windy.

I'm sharing the best of the worst photos.  😊

You can get the pattern here.  Sandra has some great patterns, so make sure you take a look around.

I managed these two photos before the quilt top went flying.

Have a great weekend.  Happy (Canadian) Thanksgiving.

TGIFF - Quilt Buzz Bingo Quilt

Welcome to Thank Goodness It's Finished Friday.  TGIFF is the opportunity to share your finish from this week.

Back in August, I played along with Quilt Buzz Bingo.  I finished the quilt top during the QAL.  And now it's finally quilted!

I did an all-over stipple in white thread.  Do you see where I quilted my name?

I love the texture from the quilting.

This is a fun new wide backing I found at my LQS.  I may have to purchase some more.

The sun started to come out after a dreary foggy morning.

Now it's time to share your finish from this week.

Pattern Testing - On The Fence

I had the opportunity to test a pattern for Joanne @ Canuck Quilter Designs.  I tested On the Fence which was released today (along with two other patterns).

I had some great green prints in my stash.  While I was cutting the fabrics, I made a last-minute decision to change things up and add some purple.

Purple made the star block pop.

This was a great pattern to make -- it was easy and fun to piece.

Although I had the inner border cut and ready to piece, I decided that I preferred no borders.

I had hoped to get this quilted before the pattern was released, but...you know...life....😉

Joanne's new patterns are on sale for a week, so make sure you stop by.

Happy October.

Pattern Testing - Interlocking Leaves

I had the pleasure of testing a pattern -- Interlocking Leaves -- for Bea @ Bea Quilter.  At 21 x 21 inches, it's a great size for a wall hanging or a table accent. The pattern can be cut using a rotary cutter or by using an Accuquilt cutter and the 6-inch GO Qube.

I have an 8-inch GO Qube, so decided to up-size the pattern.  My version finishes approximately 28 inches.

I started with the leaf border print and used matching Kona cottons for the interlocking leaves.  In my stash, I found a green print that was just the right size for the backing.

Quilting was an all-over stipple in Gold thread from Connecting Threads, and I used my favourite Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 batting.

This is a great pattern if you need fall decor for your home.  It doesn't take much time to piece.

Make sure to visit Bea's shop to purchase the pattern.  It will be on sale for a limited time.

Pattern Testing - Loome Quilt

I tested a great pattern by Riane @ Riane Elise -- Loome Quilt.  The pattern is being released today.  You may have seen my sneak peaks over on Instagram.

I used Kona Natural for the background, as well as Kona Orange, Tangerine, and Pimento.  I had planned to use purple, but I didn't have the right colours.  But guess what?  I had plenty of oranges in my stash.  😉  I'm sure that doesn't come as any surprise to those who regularly follow me.

I made the crib size which finishes 35 x 44 inches.  The pattern also has throw and twin sizes included.  I had a great print in my stash for the back.  Now I wish I had purchased more of it.

I quilted straight lines of varying widths with my walking foot using Aurifil 2150 Pumpkin thread.  I used my favourite Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 batting.

This is a great pattern that is easy to follow.  I would definitely make this pattern again.  Make sure to visit Riane to grab your pattern -- I heard it's on sale for the weekend.

TGIFF - Quilt Buzz Bingo

Welcome to Thank Goodness It's Finished Friday.  TGIFF is the opportunity to share your finish from this week.

If you would like to host TGIFF, there are lots of dates available for the remainder of 2020. You can sign up here.

Did you play along with Quilt Buzz Bingo?  It was a fun quick QAL.  Here is my quilt top finish.  This was supposed to be a fully finished quilt, but I went to PEI to babysit my two little nieces last weekend, so no quilting.  I thought I had suitable backing fabric, but I didn't, and my LQS closes at 6:00 p.m. now due to the pandemic.  It's been a hectic work week, and I wasn't able to get into my LQS before it closed, so again no quilting.

I hope you've had a less hectic week and have a finish to share.

I rotated some of the blocks in an effort to balance some of the colours.

Here's a wrinkly view without the Bingo numbers pinned to the blocks.

TGIFF - Little Girl Skirts

I am hoping to be travelling next weekend to visit my nieces.  Fingers crossed that work cooperates and that we're not affected by hurricanes.

I made skirts during my last visit, and I promised I would make more.  Aliyah loved the skirt and wore it to bed, but Miah was not impressed.

The skirts are reversible.  This print is from the Woodland collection by Natalie Lymer of Cinderberry Stitches for Lecien.

I thought taking photos of quilts was difficult...skirts are even more difficult.

I didn't have enough of the turquoise fabric for the waistband for the second skirt.

I didn't sew the ends of the elastic together as I want to measure the girls to make sure I have the right size.

I also have the print in yellow and red.  I think I'm going to use the yellow print with a red solid to make another reversible skirt pattern where the waistband matches each side of the skirt.

WIP Wednesday - Quilt Buzz Bingo

Are you playing along with Quilt Buzz Bingo?  I am, and I have all my blocks made!

I found some bright colours in my stash.

After I pieced the first five blocks, I decided I needed a better plan so I could chain piece more efficiently.

I chain pieced the next ten blocks, and they went together quickly.

And then the final ten blocks were finished.

Now to figure out a layout and piece the top (with sashing) before the September 5 deadline.

TGIFF - Criss Cross

Back in May, I shared my Criss Cross quilt top.  I tested the Criss Cross pattern for Sherry @ Powered by Quilting, but I didn't get the top quilted until now.

I quilted an all-over stipple in light grey thread.

I used the last of the turquoise Prism wideback by Studio e Fabrics that I was hoarding.

The above photos were taken mid afternoon.  The next two photos were taken about an hour before the sun began to set.  I read recently that just before sunset is a great time to take photos.  I think I prefer a little earlier in the day with a bit more sun/brightness.

I'm slowly making my way through the pile of unquilted tops.  I think there are ten remaining. 😲

Sherry released some great new patterns earlier this year.  You can purchase them out here.
