TGIFF - Harmony Hand Pieced QAL

Thanks to Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday for another great hand-pieced pattern and QAL.

This finishes at 28 inches.  I used Kona Grapemist (background), Lemon, Bright Pink, and Chartreuse.

I did machine stitch the binding to the front but hand stitched it to the back.

I used matching perle cotton, but in the corners, I stitched a line of each of the four colours.

I found a fun print in my stash to use for the backing.

I enjoy big stitch quilting on small projects like this.

I used my favourites:

WIP Wednesday - Harmony Hand Pieced Update

Did you sew along with Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday for their annual hand pieced QAL?  They offer great tutorials and videos if you're new to hand piecing.

I found Wonderfil Invisafil 100 wt thread to be awesome for piecing.  I had a spool of brown thread, but it blended well with the Kona Grapemist, Lemon, Bright Pink, and Chartreuse.

These four blocks create a great design.

Add in some flying geese and triangle blocks.

Those blocks were pieced together for the last sections for the wall hanging.

And here's everything pieced together.

And as is the norm...time to figure out a quilting plan and thread colour.  I'm going to use perle cotton to do some big stitch hand quilting.

WIP Wednesday - Harmony Hand Pieced QAL

I'm sewing along with Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday for their annual hand pieced QAL.  This year's pattern is Harmony (wall hanging and throw sizes included) -- get your copy here.

I decided to think outside the box and use Kona Grapemist for the background, with coordinating colours Lemon, Bright Pink, and Chartreuse.

The first block was a square-in-square unit.  I'm making the wall hanging size, so I only needed to make one unit.  I found a spool of Wonderfil Invisafil 100 wt thread in my stash.  It is amazing for hand piecing.

Next up were four HST units.

And then there were four fancy HST units.

I then decided to sew ahead and made the eight partial square-in-square units.  I may have been sewing during a virtual Girl Guide Provincial Council meeting. 😉

WIP Wednesday - Harmony Hand Pieced QAL

It’s time for the annual hand pieced QAL hosted by Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday.  You’ll need to get a copy of the Harmony pattern, but the QAL just started this week, so there’s plenty of time to join in.

I’ll be using Kona Grapemist for the background, along with Lemon, Chartreuse, and Bright Pink.  I’m making the wall hanging so there’s just one block to make this week.

I use a Turtles chocolate tin to hold my hand sewing tools.  I like a container with sides so I can have it on my lap while I’m stretched out on the sofa - that way I don’t lose things between the cushions. LOL

I think I’m going to re-make this square-in-a-square block using the templates rather than the stitch and flip method.  I may not have marked my stitching lines accurately as my block is about 1/16 inch off on two sides.

TGIFF - Book Club QAL

Earlier this year, I participated in the Book Club QAL hosted by Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday   As usual, I put the quilt top aside to be quilted later.  😀

The quilt top is all hand pieced, so I wanted to do big stitch hand quilting with perle cotton.

I used orange thread to quilt inside all the orange fabrics and blue inside the blue fabrics.  Unfortunately, the blue blended a bit too well.  I stitched straight lines in white thread in the sashing and borders.

Here's a closeup of the stitching.

I used Wonderfil #8 perle cotton for the quilting and to hand stitch the binding.

So glad to cross another UFO off the list.

TGIFF - Hand Pieced QAL

I am slowly making my way through all the quilt tops that have been waiting patiently to be quilted.  My plan is to finish them all before the end of 2020.

The Hand Pieced QAL co-hosted by Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday started in January 2019.

With the exception of machine quilting around the blocks to help with basting and machine stitching the binding to the front only, this 33 x 33 inch quilt is all hand pieced and hand quilted.

I am quite surprised at how much I enjoyed the hand work.  The top was finished back in April 2019, but then I didn't know how to quilt it, so it joined the pile of tops waiting to be quilted.

I used white #8 perle cotton in the all white backgrounds of the nine blocks.  And then I used various colours of #8 perle cotton to do straight lines in the setting triangles.

I also hand stitched the binding using #8 perle cotton.

My favourite Hobbs Premium 80/20 batting to make for a wonderful baby quilt.

Book Club QAL

I've been sewing along with  Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday
for the Book Club QAL.

This is the final block.  I thought hand piecing curves would be difficult, but it easy.

Here are all nine blocks in the order they were pieced.  Adding the sashing is up next.

Now I need to start thinking about how I'm going to quilt this.  But who am I kidding...this poor quilt top will be added to the ever-growing pile of UFOs.  I don't need a plan any time soon.  😂

Project Quilting 11.4 - Birds in the Air

Do you play along with Project Quilting hosted by Kim @ Persimon Dreams?  This is my third year participating.  The theme for Project Quilting 11.4 was announced at 12:00 noon on February 16 -- well after I had left home to attend QuiltCon.  I had already decided that I wouldn't play along because I didn't have a lot of sewing supplies with me.  But then while at QuiltCon I started scheming on how I might be able to participate. 😁

I sketched out a small mini Thursday night, making a list of the sizes of the two colours I needed.  I played around in EQ8 for a few design options.  Thanks to Cheryl @ Meadow Mist Designs for an awesome EQ8 class Thursday morning.

Following my class Friday night, I choose the two colours that I had sufficient fabric and cut out the pieces before leaving class.  I had hoped to sneak in several minutes of sewing before I had to leave the room.  Unfortunately, I was only able to machine sew the four HSTs needed.  Back in the hotel room, the top of the fridge became my cutting table.  😊

So I started hand sewing the pieces together.  Dena was also working on some hand work, and we ended up sewing until 2:00 a.m.  We didn't realize it had gotten so late.  I even pieced the binding strips by hand.

Dena had some white perle cotton so I started hand quilting Saturday night. And yet again, we ended up sewing late into the night.  I really enjoyed making this project.

It finishes 8.5 inches.

This project also qualifies to link up with Sarah @ Sarah Goer Quilts for her monthly Show Me Something linky party.  This month's theme is triangles.

Slow Stitching Sunday - Hand Pieced QAL

Earlier this month, I finished my blocks (here) for the the Hand Pieced QAL that was co-hosted by Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday.

The deadline to link up a finished quilt top is April 30.  I finished with two days to spare!!

It finishes around 33 inches square.

I'm still undecided on whether to hand quilt or machine quilt the top.  Although I'm seriously considering hand quilting, but it's going to have to go into the long queue...maybe a summer time project when I hope to take some time off work.

This is one of my FAL 2019 Q2 goals.

I'm linking up with Slow Stitching Sunday @ Kathy's Quilts.  It's definitely not a link up I'll use often (LOL), but I would consider a small hand pieced project from time to time.

WIP Wednesday - Hand Pieced QAL

I finally finished all my hand-pieced blocks!!  The Hand Pieced QAL was co-hosted by Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday.

Here are my nine 6.5-inch blocks.

I used Kona White for the background.

The prints are from the Michael Miller Hash Dot collection.

I need to get the sashing strips sewn on, as well as the corner triangles.  The link up for finished quilt tops opens tomorrow.  I sure hope it's open for more than a week; otherwise, I'm going to be scrambling to finish before the link up closes.

OMG: March Goal

My March One Monthly Goal is to finish my Triangle EPP project, which is also one of my FAL 2019 Q1 goals.

My dilemma was that I didn't have any more of any of the fabrics that I used.  But I did manage to find a little bit of one of the orange fabrics.

So I'm going to finish off the edges with the orange fabric that I used in the centre block.

I had to trace the shape to get the right size template to use.  So now to prepare the templates and get the pieces sewn on.

And then I'll have to figure out how to quilt it.  I'm hoping to finish the EPP portion this weekend so I'll have lots of time to decide on a quilting plan.  😊
