WIP Wednesday - Bee Round Robin

Earlier this spring, my Bee decided to do a round robin project.  There are only five of us in the Bee, one of whom is Jenn @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge.

We each created a 8-inch square centre.  There were no rules other than the maximum border you could add was 4 inches.  The plan was to exchange on a monthly basis, but we had to delay a few times due to scheduling problems.

This was a blind round robin, so once we submitted our box, we didn't see our project again until the reveal last week.

So I had to be difficult one, and my centre was about 10 x 12 inches.  And definitely not a square.  Good thing my Bee mates like me.  LOL

Mine finishes about 33 inches.  And I love it!  I thought the hard part was figuring out what to add as I received each project.  I was wrong...I have no clue on how to quilt mine or what colour thread to use.

This is Jenn's project.  She started with the blue wonky star.  Next added was the green border.  I added the yellow stars.  Then some colourful wonky triangles were added.  And finally some more wonky triangles for the outer border.

This is Nancy's project.  Jenn added the first white border with paper pieced bat and cat.  Ann added the black border with spider web.  Karel got creative and added the orange border with 3D witch hat and witch legs, and I finished off with the green border.

This is Ann's project.  Nancy added the yellow border with paper pieced flower corners.  That creative Karel added the 3D wavy border.  I felt there was a lot going on, and on the advice of Dena @ No Frickin' Blog Yet, I added the simple pink and green border -- trying to pull out the pink and green from the earlier paper pieced flowers.  And then the black border to tie it all together.

This is Karel's project.  I extended her HST centre to create some wonky arrows.  Someone added the matching triangles, followed by the green and purple border.  And then the final border with corner accents.

Both Nancy's and my projects were the same size, and the others were only several inches smaller.  It was a fun project, and I liked that we didn't get to see our projects until they were finished.  Now we need to think of another project we can work on in the new year.  Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Friday Finish - 2016 Crayon Challenge

A small finish this week.  I signed up for my first Instagram swap hosted by @thecraftyfatty.  Everyone received a postcard with three crayon colours, and you were only allowed to use those three colours.

Here are the my colours:

The closest match to Kona colours were:  Breakers, Iced Peach, and Turquoise.

I decided to use Violet Craft pattern that I used here.  You can find the pattern Forest Abstractions: Wild Carrot here.

The challenge called for a mini, so this finishes about 8 x 18 inches.

WIP Wednesday - Stash Bee Blocks

This year, I joined Stash Bee 2016.  If you're interested, you can sign up for Stash Bee 2017 starting November 1.

I was Queen Bee for September and requested an HST block using white, grey, black, and one orange.  I used the following Kona colours in the block I made:  Iron, Coal, Silver, Pepper, White, Charcoal, Shadow, and Tangerine.

Here is a close up of six of the blocks.  Great shades of orange.  Thanks to all my hive mates.

One hive mate sent me two blocks, and I'm waiting on two more blocks to arrive in the mail.  On the advice of Dena @ No Frickin' Blog Yet, I think I'm going to make another four blocks so it ends up being square.

This is probably not the final layout, but I just love it!!  I'm going to leave it on my design wall so I can look at it every day.

Time to start making more blocks.  I'm excited to get this top all pieced together.

I hope you're all working on something fun this week.

Finish Along 2016 -Q4 Goals

It's time to set my Q4 goals for Finish Along 2016.  I've decided to make a short list, as the three projects are going to take some time.  I'm linking up with Leanne at She Can Quilt.

I finished my Night Sky quilt last November.  I've been procrastinating on how to quilt it, but I think I finally have a plan.  I've decided on a purple backing, but  am undecided on thread.  I know it would look good with matching thread colours, but I don't want the hassle of the many thread changes, so I'm thinking maybe a light grey.

You may remember that I went to Glamp Stitchalot back in June in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  You can read about my adventures here and here and here.  I think I have the layout mostly figured out, but I need to finish the mountain row.

And my last project is my Makers's Tote.  I have fabrics chosen, but am tempted to change them.

Here's to a successful Q4.

Finish Friday - One Block Wonders Final Link Up

Sandy @ Upstairs Hobby Room has been hosting a monthly block QAL for the past year, called One Block Wonders.

I previously made two blocks, which you can read about below:

And now:  Rainbow Stacks.  I added a wide border so that it finishes around 25-inches for a small baby quilt.

I didn't know how to quilt it, and in desperation, I just went with stippling in a variegated thread.  I'm not happy with the result.  I should have done something different in the blue and grey sections.  Oh well, it's done, and it will keep some baby warm in a car seat or stroller.

I used the following Kona solids:

  • Pepper and Coal
  • Sky, Robin Egg, Jamaica, Lagoon, Pacific, Riveria

Friday Finish - Snowflake Shimmer QAL

The Snowflake Shimmer QAL hosted by Yvonne @ Quilting Jetgirl has come to an end.  I wasn't sure I was going to be able to finish by today's link-up deadline, but after a few late nights this week, a finish!  Who needs sleep???

Finishing at 72 x 88 inches, it was a bit difficult to get good photos.  I had to run home at lunch to catch some daylight.  I wonder what responses I'll get if I advertise:  looking for man to hold quilts.  LOL

Kona Pepper for the background, and Aurifil variegated thread #4659.

Free-motion stars and loops.  I debated doing a bit of custom quilting, something different in the squares, but who am I kidding...I'm all about the easy, quick finish.

The Aurifil worked well in my Pfaff Grand Quilter (loaded on a frame to operate like a longarm), but I didn't find any big difference from the Connecting Threads cotton thread that I use.  Since Aurifil is $12 a spool and not easily found here in Nova Scotia, I'll only be using it occasionally for special projects.

Thanks to Yvonne for hosting.  This is a great pattern, and it's been a fun quilt along.

Some of my stars are a little wonky, but I think they add character to the quilt.

And one more photo because I'm very pleased with my quilting.
