Stay at Home Round Robin - Round 1 - Curves

It's time for round 1 of the Stay at Home Round Robin (SAHRR) hosted by Gail @ Quilting Gail

I revealed my centre block last week.  This week, I added a 2.5-inch border using Kona Nightfall and Kale.

Convex and concave pieces to start.  I folded the pieces in half and creased them for easy matching.

I like using the curved templates created by Jen @ Betty Crockerass.  Based on Jen's advice, I use a yellow glue stick (fabric to fabric) to hold the pieces together instead of pins.  It makes sewing so much easier and faster.

There are many types of curves, including orange peel and improv curves/waves.  There are a variety of curved piecing templates to assist with cutting.  You can find lots of information and inspiration with a Google search.  Here are two to get you started.

Sew Kind of Wonderful - The Quick Curve Ruler makes cutting curves so easy.  I used the QCR Mini to make Posh Santa last month.

Quilting JetGirl - Yvonne has a tutorial for sewing full circles and has several curved piecing patterns.  Yvonne's patterns are well written, and I had no troubles with the curved piecing.

Here is my 10.5-inch block.  I didn't intend to have a dark background for both rounds, so I have to decide whether to continue or to figure out a transition to a different background for the next round.

Once you've finished your curved round, come back and link up (before midnight Sunday, January 23).  Don't forget to check out the other SAHRR bloggers (listed below) to get some inspiration to help you decide what type of curve you'll incorporate into your block.

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!

  1. I love those two colors together. Your shapes look like PacMan to me :) Very fun to see him nibbling on your quilt. I love how bold this looks; the solids were a great choice.

  2. I think the dark background is fantastic. I like the movement the curves create!

  3. What a pretty look Anja! That dark background just makes it pop.

  4. Great start, Anja! I just received a curvy link over the weekend. It's time to go play!

  5. Good morning Anja! These fabrics are just stunning together and your round two blocks do their job of highlighting the center block quite nicely. Another great layout choice for drunkard's path blocks - I love it! Thanks for the linky party and getting us started off on a fun path. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

  6. I like your background for both. I am going to have to think about this one. Thanks for the challenge!

  7. The curves look great, and I'm curious to see if you decide to stick with the background color or find a way to transition!

  8. Curves are not my thing, but I will give it a go in some form! LOL I like the way you did yours!

  9. Curves will be so much fun! I am waiting for the second clue, as a I sometimes do one in the corner, and one in the border, so we will see. I was thinking of a drunkard's path variation, but I am feeling a little freer about it after reading your post, so my ideas may change!
