OMG Finish - Blooming Wallflowers

Procrastination at its best...I quilted and bound my June OMG (hosted by Patty @ Elm Street Quilts) today, which is the last day of the month and the last day of the link up.  😊

I had all the best intentions to get this quilted earlier in the month, but I couldn't decide on a quilting plan.  I often struggle because my "longarm" (Pfaff Grand Quilter mounted on a frame) only has a 6-inch depth for quilting, and I don't like to do too many starts and stops -- who has time to bury threads.

In the end, I did an all-over loop in a variegated thread -- Connecting Threads Primary Variegated #21223.

While searching the internet for inspiration, I happened upon a blog post that made me very angry.  It was about free motion quilting, but instead of starting her post with encouragement, the blogger basically said no one should be doing an all-over motif.  Are you freaking kidding me????  I have no idea what she said next, because I quickly left, and I'm glad I don't remember where I was.  Sometimes an all-over motif is what is best, and sometimes I just don't have time for anything else.  Don't judge me because I don't quilt like you.  Maybe offer some helpful tips to help me get better at free motion quilting and share your knowledge.

I wasn't sure if the variegated thread was the right choice, but once I started, there was no stopping.  It blended in quite well, but there was good contrast in the background.  The loops give it wonderful texture.

My efforts to get quilt tops quilted do not seem to be working.  Even with this finish, I still have 11 unquilted tops....seriously??  Clearly, I'm not working fast enough.

This was the last of my FAL Q2 goals.

  1. Very good job on the quilting; love the texture. It looks great. FM all over motif is all I do; mostly loops, circles, hearts and swirls. I vary the size and sometimes do circles inside the circles or curliques on the hearts. Continue to do what is right for you.

  2. I think your all over quilting looks great and who cares what other quilters think. Your finished quilt looks great. I know what it's like to have a whole pile of quilts that need to be quilted. We'll get them done eventually.

  3. Anja, this came out so beautifully, I had to jump on my laptop so I could leave a comment. I hate my laptop, so you know I'm impressed. There certainly are 'no rules' and one person's opinion doesn't make something right. Remember when Lori Kennedy posted that quilters should't meander/stipple? I walked out of a quilt shop this past winter because the 'clerk' had that same attitude, but about cutting fabric on a mat. Her way is not THE way. I took offense, and she lost my business. Keep up the good work!

  4. Your quilt your choice! Nothing wrong with allover quilting, sometimes that's all a quilt wants. Your quilt is beautiful with gorgeous texture.

  6. An all over loop is perfect! It is hard to get it all done, isn't it? I really try to keep doing one UFO a month in addition to my Island Batik projects, so usually my OMG I don't let be an IB project, and I try to add in one or two others on my goals for the quarter. So far it is helping. This fall will be a challenge, as I am doing a BOM with Sherry in addition to IB.

  7. Love your quilt, Anja. The variegated thread looks great - blending in some places and showing off in others. I've never tried variegated threads - I'm tempted to try now. I have about as many un-quilted tops as you do and many more boxes of projects that are not even close to a finished top. They are called UFOs - a quilter's right to have as many as she wants :-)

  8. Done is better than perfect, always. And I like the thread you used - the lighter bits are eye catching and help move your eye around the whole quilt.

  9. I love this quilt pattern! Does it have a name? I was staring, trying to deconstruct to reproduce the block, but it hurt my brain.

  13. I can feel your pain in the unquilted tops that accumulate! I have a stack that needs quilted too! This was a great finish! Thanks for participating in the Finish-A-Long this quarter.
