TGIFF - Hand Pieced QAL

I am slowly making my way through all the quilt tops that have been waiting patiently to be quilted.  My plan is to finish them all before the end of 2020.

The Hand Pieced QAL co-hosted by Patty @ Elm Street Quilts and Kristin @ Simple Handmade Everyday started in January 2019.

With the exception of machine quilting around the blocks to help with basting and machine stitching the binding to the front only, this 33 x 33 inch quilt is all hand pieced and hand quilted.

I am quite surprised at how much I enjoyed the hand work.  The top was finished back in April 2019, but then I didn't know how to quilt it, so it joined the pile of tops waiting to be quilted.

I used white #8 perle cotton in the all white backgrounds of the nine blocks.  And then I used various colours of #8 perle cotton to do straight lines in the setting triangles.

I also hand stitched the binding using #8 perle cotton.

My favourite Hobbs Premium 80/20 batting to make for a wonderful baby quilt.

  1. What a lovely, colorful finish! I'm intrigued by hand quilting but rarely do any. How did you find sewing the perle cotton through the Hobbs batting? Would you recommend that specific batting for hand quilting?

  10. You have enticed me to try again to hand quilt. I had a small project, a table runner. It sat for nearly a year. Each attempt, I was discouraged. I took out the stitches and put it away. I finally machine stitched straight lines with my walking foot and called it done! But, I really want to do some quilting like yours! It’s awesome!

  14. What a lovely finish! I have a couple hand projects to get back too. I always thought I would hand sew at night, but I don't do it as much as I did. Maybe its time to bring it back.

  22. This is such a lovely finish Anja! I love the almost "vintage" feel the hand-quilting gives the quilt. Your lines of stitching look really straight - do you mark the quilt top before you start quilting or do you eyeball it? :-)
