OMG Success - Stellar Stars BOM

My final UFO is now complete!!  (The 2019 and 2020 temperature quilts may or may not be completed at some point.)  My OMG goal for January was to finish my Stellar Stars BOM.  Patty @ Elm Street Quilts hosts One Monthly Goal (OMG).

Kona Quicksilver became the new background when I couldn't find Art Gallery Snow in Canada.

I was about an hour too late to get decent daylight photos, but I liked how some of them turned out, so here's a mix of indoor and outdoor photos.

I did an all-over stipple in Silver thread by Connecting Threads, with my favourite Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 batting.

The quilting gives great texture.

I could have added one more border with the flying geese blocks I had, but I was ready for this project to be finished.  As it turned out, I needed to increase the size of the backing so I made good use of the blocks.

I like how the shadows of the tree branches look on the backing.

All the snow we recently received is slowly melting, so there are patches of grass throughout the yard.

WIP Wednesday - Stellar Stars Update

Earlier this week, I set my One Monthly Goal (OMG)  -- finish my Stellar Stars BOM quilt.

I'm using Kona Quicksilver as my new background.  The centre is pieced, and I hope to get the flying geese borders added over the weekend.

OMG - January 2021 - Stellar Stars BOM

Patty @ Elm Street Quilts hosts One Monthly Goal (OMG).  Last year, I struggled with linking up my goal in time each month.

As I mentioned in my January 1 blog post, I have one UFO (not including my two temperature quilts).  I won the pattern for the Stellar Stars 2018 Block of the Month by Cristy @ Purple Daisies Quilting.  I also won the monthly dyed fabric and matching thread collections.

I last shared an update in December 2018.   I fell behind and then I ran out of the background fabric - Art Gallery Snow.  I wasn't able to find any in Canada, and it was too costly to order from the US.

Here are my blocks.

After having a discussion with my quilt friend Dena and playing in EQ8, I have come up with a layout that uses the the blocks I have.  I'm going to use Kona Quicksilver as my new background.

My January OMG is to piece these blocks into a top and then quilt it so I can mark this project off my to-do list.

WIP Wednesday - Stellar Stars BOM

It's Day 12 of the 31 Day Blog Writing Challenge.

I am so far behind in my Stellar Stars BOM.  I'm still working on April's blocks.

There were 16 small flying geese blocks.  And when I took this photo, I saw that I trimmed one of the blocks on the sew line, not the cut line.  Drat......

I finished one of the large flying geese blocks.  Only 15 more to go.

And there's still a 12.5-inch paper pieced block to do.  All but the small yellow block were paper pieced.

I think it's safe to say that I will not finish this BOM before the end of the year.

WIP Wednesday - Stellar Stars BOM

I'm slowly, very slowly, making my way through the Stellar Stars 2018 Block of the Month by Cristy @ Purple Daisies Quilting.

I forgot to show my third March block -- Shadow Blossom, which is a 6.5-inch block.  I had trouble adding seam allowance to turn under for the applique, so I drew my cutting lines.

A little extra work, but I had plenty to iron under the edges.

Machine applique went well, thanks to glue basting.  I didn't think I'd like glue basting, but I think it's my new favourite technique.

And voilà...a finished block.  The petals are not as round as they should be, but I'm happy with it.

Now on to the three April blocks.  First up was the Ohio Star, another 6.5-inch block.  Perfect seam and point matching thanks to glue basting.

And the other two April blocks are paper piecing. There are 16 Flying Geese sashing blocks.  I cut fabric for all the blocks, even though we only make two blocks per month.

These are two of the eight B sections (4.5 x 6.5 inches) that are sewn to the A sections (4.5 x 10.5 inches) to create the sashing blocks.

And we make eight more of the B sections in a different colour scheme.

I love the the Quilter's Newsprint by the Electric Quilt Company.  It's thinner than copy paper, but it's not as see through.  And it tears away a lot easier.  I'm hoping that I'll be able to finish up the rest of the April blocks more quickly now that I have all the fabric cut.

Finish Along 2018 Q3 Goals

It's time to set -- and declare to the universe -- my Q3 goals for Finish Along 2018.

FAL 2018 is hosted by a community of bloggers around the world, and you can link up with any one of them.  I currently link up with Izzy @ Dizzy Quilts.

My goals are:

1.  Retreat Bag by Emmaline Bags - I already have the wire frames needed, but I need to select fabric.

2.  Stellar Stars Block of the Month - I am many months behind in this BOM.  I need to make the blocks for the months of April, May, June, and July.  And most of them are paper pieced.

3.  Milky Way Sampler - This was a 2017 BOM hosted by Alyce @ Blossom Heart Quilts.  I fell behind basically after it started -- only two blocks completed.  I'm going to make the blocks for March, April, May, June, and July.  These, too, are paper pieced patterns.  I hope to get them all done before the end of 2018.

I think that's more than enough paper pieced blocks to keep me busy for the next three months.

OMG Success - Stellar Stars

My May goal for One Monthly Goal was to finish the January and February blocks for the Stellar Stars 2018 Block of the Month by Cristy @ Purple Daisies Quilting.

✔ Done.  I even finished two of the March blocks.

This is Limelight -- a 12.5-inch block from January.  January's fabrics were red and pink.

As well as a 6.5-inch Ohio Star.

February's fabrics were orange and red.  This is Friends Forever -- another 12.5-inch block.

And another 6.5-inch Ohio Star.

Yellow fabrics made an appearance in March.  Another 12.5-inch block -- Fire Flower.

And...another 6.5-inch Ohio Star.

I gave up on the third block for March -- was having some difficulties with the applique.  I'll try again -- think I need to re-start and not try to fix what I have.

I received my May fabric today.  I think next month's OMG will be the April and May blocks.

OMG May - Stellar Stars 2018 BOM

Back in December, I won an Instagram contest.  And boy did I win.  Not only did I win the pattern for the Stellar Stars 2018 Block of the Month by Cristy @ Purple Daisies Quilting, I also won the monthly fabric and thread collections.

These are beautiful hand-dyed fabrics.  This is January's collection.

Sadly, I've only managed to make one of the January blocks -- Ohio Star.

This is February's collection.

I can't wait to break into March's collection to get my hands on those oranges.

Loving the yellow and gray for April.

I don't think I'll be able to fully catch up this month (there are two blocks each month), but my goal will be to do the January and February blocks...with a hope to do more.
