TGIFF - Brown Bag Challenge

Merry Christmas.  Happy Hanukkah.  Happy Holidays.  The holiday season is a time for celebration and a time for giving.  The spirit is in the togetherness and the thought to which you put into thinking about others.

This year, my guild (Maritime Modern Quilt Guild) did a brown bag challenge.  Each participant put 2 metres of fabric (yardage, charm squares, fat quarters, etc.) into a bag.  I got Gillian's bag.  She does not use social media, so I had to talk to other guild members to get some ideas.

There were three fabrics:  maple leaf print, green, and cream.  I decided to make a table runner and placemats.

I was able to make four placemats:  two with green background and two with cream background.  This was a good challenge in learning to use fabric wisely -- measure three times, measure again, cut once.  😉

I used gold thread and quilted a few different motifs, which do not show well in the photos.

I received a wonderful tote bag from Gail.  I put three fabrics in my bag:  polka dot, orange and purple.

I love it!

This was a great opportunity to challenge ourselves to use fabrics we might not normally use and to learn more about a fellow guild member in order to make something specifically for them.

Plum Pudding Table Runner and Placemats

Today is my day on the two-week blog hop featuring Plum Pudding, the new signature fabric line for Sherry @ Powered by Quilting.

There is a great mix of light and dark fabrics in this collection, so I went with a classic log cabin block.  The table runner is 16 x 32 inches.

I made two matching placemats that are 12 x 18 inches.

I did straight-line quilting with Aurifil #2350 Copper.

TGIFF - Gazebo Table Topper

The last pattern in the Journey 2 Nebula QAL hosted by Jaybird Quilts was Gazebo.

I shared in my progress post that I was going to attempt to use my ruler foot.  I was pleasantly surprised at how well my domestic Singer sewed.  Now there was a different story with the operator.....LOL

 

I decided to keep it simple -- using the ruler that came with my Westalee ruler foot.  Straight lines in the half hexagons.  It was a challenge making sure to move both the ruler and the fabric at the same time.

The curved side of the ruler was a huge challenge.  I'll stick to the straight lines for now.

I have another quilt top in mind that I'd like to do ruler work on, but I think I need another practice piece first.

Gazebo Table Topper

The Gazebo pattern is the last in the Journey 2 Nebula QAL hosted by Jaybird Quilts.

Once I had the fabric all cut, the piecing went quickly.

At this point, the pieces were in the shape of the Hex N More ruler.

I love how it turned out.

I purchased a ruler foot for my Singer domestic.  She doesn't like free motion quilting much, but I thought I'd give the ruler foot a try.  So I've decided this will be my test project since it's small.  If you have any suggestions for a quilting plan, I'd love to hear from you.

Dust Off an Old Book Blog Hop

This week, Bea @ Beaquilter is hosting the Dust Off an Old Book blog hop.

For my turn on the blog hop, I choose a project that required free-motion quilting.  I thought it would be a great opportunity to practice.

I choose The Modern Quilt Workshop by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr.

The authors indicated that the pattern Redwork was an "homage to the redwork of our quiltmaking ancestors." 

The white background is technically the "front" but is the back on my quilt.  I prefer the teal side over the front.  Probably because it hides most of my free-motion issues.  😉

I didn't keep the size of my stipple consistent, and I should have done it much smaller.

I used Kona Bleached White and Teal.  It makes for a great table topper.

Island Batik Ambassador Challenge - Top it Off

Note:  All products in this post were given to me by Island Batik as part of their Ambassador program.

The theme for the October Island Batik Ambassador challenge was Top it Off.  We were challenged to create a holiday runner or table topper using an applique technique.

After searching the internet for some inspiration, I decided on a spring/summer theme, rather than a specific holiday.

I used Lara Buccella's Crafted Applique method.  It's an awesome technique for raw edge applique.  I received some awesome prints in my July Ambassador box.  Thanks Island Batik!  Don't you just love this teal swirl.  I used fabrics from the Batik Foundations.

Matching Aurifil thread for the win.  I used all the colours:

• #1148 Light Jade
• #4659 Mango Mist
• #2134 Spun Gold
• #4225 Eggplant
• #5001 Ocher Yellow
• #3840 French Lilac

Since my design was fairly simple, I decided to practice my free-motion quilting.  Now that my Singer domestic has been serviced, free-motion quilting has become easier.  I didn't have a plan when I sat down to the machine.  I started out with flowers, but after two, I wasn't feeling it, so switched to swirls in the background.  I echoed both the inside and outside of each petal.

I used my favourite Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 batting.  I love it so much, I may have ten...okay maybe twenty...or maybe more...packages stashed in my sewing room.  😊

The back is an awesome mermaid print from the Mermaid Cove collection.

I need to put some thought into a name for this table runner.  I don't work with batiks much, but I do know that I am now a converted Island Batik consumer.

This has been an interesting year of challenging myself to create new projects each month.  November's project is already done and ready for the blog hop (stay tuned for more details).  I have a plan for December and can't wait to start piecing.

TGIFF - Chain Linx Table Runner

I love testing patterns for designers, especially when they are friends.  This is Chain Linx by Karen @ Sugar Free Quilts.  The pattern has four sizes:  20 x 20 inches, 20 x 40 inches, 40 x 60 inches, and 60 x 60 inches.

I finished this table runner many, many months ago, but I never got around to quilting it.  The background is Kona Ash.  I used scraps for all the chains, including Kona Poppy.

I did an all-over boxy stipple in light grey thread.

Although the quilting is not the most creative, it does give the table runner some texture.

This makes for a fun table runner.

But it could also be used as a wall hanging.

TGIFF - Rock Candy

It's Friday!  And I have a finish!

It appears I have been on a Kona and Jaybird Quilts kick lately.  Rocky Candy is a fun, quick table topper.

Kona:  Sour Apple, Rich Red, Torch, Tulip, Amethyst, Magneta,
Camellia, Niagara, Lagoon, Tangerine, Papaya, Kiwi, and Black.

Needed some FMQ practice -- athough FMQ was probably not the best quilting choice for this project.

What Have I Done?

Fox and Friends by Lorna over at Sew Fresh Quilts has been on my wish list for some time, and I finally purchased it this weekend.  So off to my LQS yesterday to get the Kona needed...where I accidentally bought a quilt kit.

The kit was on sale for $19.99 -- for that price, I had to buy it.  So although I said Nephew wasn't getting another quilt (because he already has many quilts from Auntie), he loves (and plays) basketball, so...another quilt for Nephew.  Another quilt for the to-do list...what have I done?  March has only just started and already an addition to the 2015 to-do list.

Time to choose a goal for March for the ALYOF.  Mini Lotus by Jaybird Quilts has small pieces that I don't like to work with, but since I've already started the project to match a table runner...it needs to get finished.

Clearly wasn't paying attention to the word "Mini" in the title...or the mini Hex n More ruler that came with it...

Double Finish Friday!

Give this girl a gold star...make that two gold stars!!  Two finishes to brag about.

Thanks for the suggestions on how to quilt the Seaside table runner. Zig zag quilting was the winner, which was my first thought.

This was my first attempt using Jaybird Quilts' Sidekick ruler.  Great ruler, with lots of versatility.

On to the Atkinson Designs table runner.  The Hex N More ruler came in handy for cutting the triangles.

That's Kona Curry in case you were wondering.

This project was quick to cut out and just as quick to piece - will definitely use this pattern again.

Two projects completed on my 2015 to-do list (which is still not fully finalized).  What a great way to start the year.  Hoping to continue this quilting high and finish the Mini Lotus this weekend.
