Dog Gone Cute

Lorna over at Sew Fresh Quilts comes up with the most adorable animal patterns.  Her latest is Dog Gone Cute.

Today is Day 1 of the blog hop showcasing some of the wonderful dog creations that have been in the works since September.  I decided to make a baby quilt using Kona Bluebell for the background.

I didn't want to FMQ through all their cute little faces, so I used the walking foot to outline the faces.  That was a lot of twisting and turning.  Next time, I'm just going to quilt their faces and save myself the headache.

This is Dog #1 in the large block.

Dog #3 in the large block.

Dog #5 in the small block.

Lorna graciously posted a tutorial for the various dog blocks on her blog.  There's still time to participate.

Here is the blog hop schedule for this week.  Stop by to see all the Dog Gone Cute creations.

  3. This is a lovely finish Anja. Nice to see both size blocks in the same project. I am just quilting mine at the moment and have decided to go over there faces .... although trying to avoid their black eyes and noses!!

  6. Hi Anja, a beautifully simple quilt, and I know it was a pain, but I think not FMQing over the dogs make them stand out all the more, very cute!

  10. I love that you used both size dogs in the pattern. It looks like a family! Pretty blue background, too. I know what you mean about quilting over the faces. I hesitated with that as well. Great finish!

  21. That really is a doggone cute baby quilt Anja! I know what you mean about the walking foot, twisting and turning and bunching and feeding bulk through the arm...been there done that! Seems like it'd be easier but usually it is not, right?

  27. I love that you used both sizes for the quilt. It looks great. I'm doing the small version and I don't think I'll quilt the faces either. I don't use my walking foot for quilting much. I cheat and use my free motion ans there's less turning of the quilt needed

  28. A perfect baby quilt. Soft colors....with puppies....a winner!

  34. You don't need to quilt their faces or outline them. Just use a smaller FMQ pattern and quilt near the pups, but not on them. Or FMQ outline them. They turned out really well! A cute little puppy family!

  35. I like how you changed up the layout of the quilt with the large dogs with the smaller ones.

  36. I had the same thought when quilting, I didn't want to mess with their faces. One of my main focuses when quilting lately has been to slow down (which requires me to also plan ahead, I'm such a procrastinator) but when I do I am finding it a lot easier to work around things like the shape of the dog. Did you use a walking foot to go around the dogs or your FMQ foot?

I really like the idea of a baby quilt with these blocks, I will have to remember that option!
