Vintage Reimagined - Lone Star

Note:  All products in this post were given to me by Island Batik as part of their Ambassador program.

My second challenge as a 2019 Island Batik Ambassador was not stressful like the first challenge; however, I did delay making a decision on what to make.  The monthly theme is:  Vintage Reimagined -- vintage quilts inspiring new creations (36-inch square or larger).

I had more or less decided to make a Lone Star/Star of Bethlehem.  I like working with solid fabrics, so Amish quilts intrigue me.  But I second guessed my choice for a week or two.  As I Googled some potential patterns, I remembered a pattern that I wanted to try.  So I headed to the blog, hoping there were some directions.  It was my lucky day -- not only was there a tutorial, there was a chart giving various quilt sizes.  Score!!

Even better, Vasudha @ Storied Quilts (another Island Batik Ambassador) granted me permission to use the tutorial and she even helped me with colour placement.

I used these eight Basics, along with Black for the background:

These were great fabrics to work with.

Only two 2.5-inch strips were needed from each of the eight colours to make this 40-inch quilt.  In keeping with the theme, I pieced my strip sets with my Singer Featherweight.

Last Saturday night, I stayed up until 1:45 a.m. to piece all the star points because I wanted to see the awesome spiral that Vasudha's pattern makes.  😫

I love the star that forms in the centre.  Look at the amazing colours and prints.

I used Hobbs Premium 80/20 Black batting.  And I used my Clover chaco-liner (grey) to mark my quilting lines.

Simple straight-line quilting using Aurifil thread #4150 Creme Brule.  It's a great variegated thread.

I would definitely use Vasudha's tutorial to make another spiral Lone Star.

Now to finalize my plans for my April project.

I struggle with naming my quilts.  I haven't yet been able to come up with a suitable name for this quilt.  I'm open to any suggestions you may have.

WIP Wednesday - Modern Plus Sampler

I finally finished piecing the quit top for the Modern Plus Sampler QAL, hosted by Cheryl @ Meadow Mist Designs and Paige @ Quilted Blooms.  The sampler is based on the book Modern Plus Sign Quilts (Canadians can purchase at Chapters Indigo).

This is one my my FAL Q1 goals.

I don't have any quilting ideas, so I'll take some time to think on it.  I have a lot of WIPs to keep me busy in the meantime. 😉

Project Quilting 10.6 - Craving Chocolate

And just like that, it's the final week of Project Quilting Season 10.  The final theme was Chocolate, either the candy or the colour.  Hmmm....what to make.....

I used a chocolate print to make a mug rug.

  I added some Kona Chocolate and a polka dot for the border.

I am pleased to say that I participated in all six challenges this season.

Have Bag, Will Travel

Michelle @ From Bolt to Beauty hosted a QAL two weeks ago for the Cargo Duffle pattern by Noodlehead.  My fabric was cut, but I didn't sew along based on the schedule -- life keeps getting in the way of my sewing fun.

But I've managed to finish my Cargo Duffle in time to link up!

The print is a Robert Kaufman canvas, paired with Kona Tangerine.

I highly recommend that you read Michelle's blog posts for the QAL.  She has lots of helpful hints, including instructions for lining the bag.

Now I need to plan a trip so I can use my new bag.  😊

Mulberry Quilt by Briar Hill Designs

Do you follow Briar Hill Designs?  Caverly paints the artwork for their fabric collections, and Julia is the pattern maker and quilt designer.  I met Julia as we are both members of Maritime Modern Quilt Guild.

When Julia needed help with some sewing, I happily volunteered.  I love pattern testing and helping out designers, especially when they are friends.  I got to play with some beautiful fabrics -- Bequest.

I pieced the four sections of quilt.  You can purchase the Mulberry pattern here.  Julia then pieced the four sections together, and voila...a finished Mulberry quilt.

You may recall that I shared my first three blocks last month for the 52 Blocks in 52 Weeks quilt along being hosted by the Canadian Quilters' Association (CQA).  You don't have to be Canadian to play along.  😉

Trinket Sew Along

Have you seen the Alison Glass Trinket Sew Along?

Clinton Modern Creative,  a wonderful Canadian online store, is a shop sponsor for the SAL.  Owner Darla has recruited some Canadian bloggers to sew along.  Joining me are:

I'll be using two Alison Glass bundles:  Insignia and Kaleidoscope.

I don't have a plan for my blocks/layout, i.e. I didn't do a colouring sheet.  I'm just picking colours as I go along.

Today is the first day of the Sew Along, and we are making block Lines #1.  I like to cut templates to help me with paper piecing -- otherwise, I always make mistakes -- those pesky angles.  I marked on my paper template the size of fabric needed.

It didn't take long for Lines #1 to be completed.

There's still time to join in.  Clinton Modern Creative has lots of Alison Glass fabrics, including some Trinket bundles, as well as notions such as the Violet Craft seam roller.

Project Quilting 10.5 - Abecedarius

It's the fifth week of Project Quilting -- just one more challenge to go for this season.  This week's theme was Abecedarius.  I had a few thoughts on what to make, but I kept changing my mind.  I finally made a decision around supper time on Saturday.  I wanted to make something practical, and I didn't have a need for any more quilts or wall hangings.

So...monogrammed tote bags for my nieces.  I found this tutorial online.

I forgot to box the corners on the bottom of this bag...oops...and I wasn't undoing any stitching to fix it.  I don't like the handles made with fleece.  It took forever to turn the tube inside out, and they're floppy.  I think I'd use cotton webbing next time.

I made the letters using Alphabet Soup by Jaybird Quilts.  I used Kona Purple.

I remembered to box the corners on this bag.  I used Kona Honeysuckle.

When they come to visit, there are lots of bags of lots of stuff.  So now they have personalized bags.  It's very stressful to Auntie trying to figure out which diaper belongs to which niece.  LOL

I plan to sew today, but hoping to sneak in a nap this afternoon -- darn the time change.  😫  Although I'll be happy to see more daylight.

OMG: March Goal

My March One Monthly Goal is to finish my Triangle EPP project, which is also one of my FAL 2019 Q1 goals.

My dilemma was that I didn't have any more of any of the fabrics that I used.  But I did manage to find a little bit of one of the orange fabrics.

So I'm going to finish off the edges with the orange fabric that I used in the centre block.

I had to trace the shape to get the right size template to use.  So now to prepare the templates and get the pieces sewn on.

And then I'll have to figure out how to quilt it.  I'm hoping to finish the EPP portion this weekend so I'll have lots of time to decide on a quilting plan.  😊
